Bathroom tile planning is easier when the entire room is treated as one coordinated system instead of a series of individual purchases.
Separate the Tile Areas
List each area that needs a decision: main bathroom floor, shower walls, shower floor, tub surround, niche, bench, curb and any accent area. Some bathrooms use one material throughout; others use several.
Think About Scale
Large-format wall tile, smaller shower-floor tile and decorative accents can create very different installation requirements. Discuss the intended material sizes with the contractor before ordering.
Plan the Grout
Grout color can either blend with the tile or create contrast. Record the grout choice with the tile selection so it is not treated as a last-minute decision.
Confirm the Shower Floor Material
The shower floor is a distinct selection. Choose a product appropriate for the intended application and coordinate it with the shower wall tile and drain finish.
Decide How Niches and Benches Are Finished
If the shower includes a niche or bench, decide whether those areas use the field tile, an accent tile or another material. The trim and edge details also need to be considered.
Plan Curbs and Thresholds
Ask how shower curbs, thresholds and transitions will be finished. Stone, tile and other options can produce different looks and detailing.
Order Enough Material
Exact quantities should be based on the project layout and installation requirements, not only room square footage. Discuss the ordering quantity with the project team before purchasing material.
Inspect Material Before Installation
Check that the material, color, size and quantity match what was selected. Natural variation and dye-lot differences can matter depending on the product.
