A remodeling project is easier to manage when the homeowner and contractor are clear about the same things from the beginning. Before a kitchen or bathroom remodel starts, use these seven questions to expose gaps in the scope, clarify responsibilities and identify decisions that still need to be made.

1. What Is Included in the Scope—and What Is Not?

Ask for a clear description of the work being discussed. For a kitchen, that might include demolition, cabinets, countertops, appliances, electrical, plumbing, flooring, painting and finish work. For a bathroom, it may include demolition, waterproofing, tile, plumbing fixtures, vanity, glass, lighting, ventilation and paint. The point is not to create an endless list; it is to make sure both sides are talking about the same project.

2. Which Decisions Must Be Made Before Construction Begins?

Some selections affect rough work or ordering and need to be made early. Others can wait. Ask the contractor which items are critical before the start date. This can include plumbing fixtures, appliances, cabinet layouts, tile, lighting or other products that affect installation details.

3. Who Is Responsible for Ordering Each Item?

If you are buying some products yourself, define that responsibility clearly. Know who orders it, who checks it when it arrives, where it is stored and what happens if it is damaged, incomplete or late. Owner-supplied items are easier to manage when they are tracked instead of assumed.

4. How Will Changes Be Handled?

Remodeling projects sometimes reveal conditions that were not visible before work began, and homeowners sometimes request changes after seeing the space open up. Ask how changes are documented, priced and approved so there is a clear process instead of relying on verbal conversations.

5. How Will We Communicate During the Project?

Decide where project questions and decisions will be documented. Text messages are convenient, but important approvals and selections can get lost quickly. Ask how the contractor prefers to track decisions, updates, schedule changes and owner questions.

6. What Should I Have Ready Before the First Day?

Ask what the contractor needs from you before work begins. That might include final selections, access arrangements, cleared storage areas, appliance information, finish schedules or other project-specific items. A simple preconstruction checklist can prevent avoidable delays.

7. What Is Still Uncertain?

This may be the most useful question. Ask both sides to identify the items that are still undecided, dependent on field conditions or awaiting information. Uncertainty is normal; hidden uncertainty is what creates confusion.
