The City of Temecula currently offers a Permit Ready Accessory Dwelling Unit (PRADU) program with pre-designed plans for eligible properties. The plans are available from the City at no charge, while application, permit, utility, construction and other project-specific costs can still apply. Homeowners should review the current City requirements before selecting a plan.

The program is intended to simplify the plan-selection and review process for qualifying projects, but each property still requires the applicable site information, clearances, permits and City review.

What are ADUs?

Temecula ADU program

ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) are self-contained residential units built on the same property as a primary residence. You may be more familiar with their other names, like granny flats, In-law units, accessory apartments, or backyard cottages.

They can be attached to or detached from the primary residence and can be used as a separate living space for family members, rental units, studios, or home offices. They include living, sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation facilities – essentially a mini home.

ADUs can be as small as studio apartments or as big as a 3-bedroom unit (max. 1200 sq ft).

What are the Benefits of the temecula ADU program?

  • ADUs provide additional & affordable housing for tenants looking for a place to live or for in-home employees
  • Provide privacy for homes with extended family.
  • Cost-effective construction
  • Additional options for couples, single parents, young people, and seniors

What is the Goal of the Permit-Ready Program?

ADUs are cheaper to build compared to traditional single-family housing units and have been successful in other cities.

The City of Temecula provides Permit Ready ADU plans and current submission information for homeowners considering the program. Review the City’s current handout, checklist and property requirements before choosing a PRADU design.
